Green St. Records - [back to Labels]

Every spring semester, Green St. Records will put out a compilation album of the finest musical acts that University of Illinois students have to offer, and distribute it to students of the University of Illinois and the community. The process starts during the fall semester with the auditioning and meeting of potential artists for the album. It will continue with the recording and production of the album, culminating in the release of the album in late April.

The Purposes

To provide, annually, a compilation album of the finest musical acts that students at the University of Illinois have to offer, and to distribute it at the lowest cost possible to the students of this university.

To give all students involved experience and knowledge in the recording, producing and promotion of an album, and to gain insight into what it is like to work in the music industry.

To promote the highest standard of music among Illinois students while providing an opportunity for talented student musicians to share their art with the university community, as well as giving them an outlet in which to spark their musical careers.

A Short History

“Not only is this a first for the University,” says co-founder and co-president Joshua Morton, a sophomore in Speech Communication, “but it’s a first for the Big Ten. We’re excited to be bringing something so fresh and new to the U of I.”
The idea came to Morton after exploring different music programs at other colleges across the country.

“I noticed a couple of the schools had organizations that took student music and distributed it to the university community. I thought, ‘why can’t we do that here?’”

Since late in the Spring 2003 semester, the diverse team of music, engineering, speech, and accounting majors has been working diligently to bring their vision to life.

“We’re really hoping the student body catches on to this,” says Jason Drucker, co-founder and co-president. “I think that the students want something different and unique at the University, and this is the perfect opportunity to give it to them.”

Who Can Be on a Green St. Records Album?

ANYONE!

We do not put only one genre of music on the album. Our records are a blend of different genres that musically represent the student body of the University of Illinois.
