About Us... Aren't you just another "Zine"?
OpeningBands is a collective of volunteer writers, photographers, and music enthusiasts, all of whom contribute their work in
the interest of spreading knowledge and news of independent, local, and regional artists, as well as good music in general.
We work closely with the CIA - Champaign-Urbana Independent-Music Assocation, and have agreed to donate the
entirety of our advertising and donation revenue towards CIA expenses such as shows, flyers, and other forms of promotion. By
donating or taking out an ad with OpeningBands, you are not only helping the site improve, but helping out the music scene in
Champaign-Urbana and its surrounding areas
A lot of work goes into OpeningBands, from writing to web design and programming. The Intelligence Report, for example,
rquired approximately 50 man hours worth of programming, and takes several hours each week to maintain. All of this is done
so that an accurate and thorough database of concerts is available for free to the public.
As a volunteer effort, we are always looking for submissions of artwork, photos, and writing. If you are at all interested in
contributing to OpeningBands, please don't hesitate to contact us at contribute@openingbands.com.
It is worth noting that there is a certain image OpeningBands intends to convey. While we do not censor our writers, and we
welcome criticism, we seek to maintain a positive attitude. Therefore, in a critical album review, for example, we will shy
away from slamming artists, and instead point out that musical tastes are subjective, but there are things the band could
improve upon.
In doing this, we hope to break the stereotype of the "pretentious indie rocker". There are OpeningBands writers who will
proudly admit they listen to mainstream acts in addition to their indie collections. There are OpeningBands writers who
listen to Jazz and Blues as much as they do Punk. Diverse musical tastes have become prevalent as of late, and we feel that
this is a wonderful thing. We hope to help continue that trend by introducing you, the reader, to new artwork, musical or
otherwise, that you enjoy.
More information on OpeningBands will be posted soon, as well as more information on the CIA.
