| Featured Band: i:scintilla | In three quick years, Chicago's I:SCINTILLA jumped from recording demo songs in a bedroom to collaborating with some of modern music's best artists and releasing albums on an international level. Fronted by Brittany Bindrim (vocals/words) and backed by Jim Cookas (guitar/programming), Vince Grech (drums), and Chad Mines (guitar/bass), the group seamlessly fuses electronic and rock elements while pushing the boundaries of pop music. Bindrim's intensely seductive voice and insightful words paint a dark picture of loss, redemption, and introspection and are delivered via insatiably catchy hooks. The music drapes the mood with intricately layered synthesizers, grinding guitar riffs, and a mix of live and programmed drums. The quartet's unique sound has drawn comparisons to GARBAGE, THEATRE OF TRAGEDY, and THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE.

| Added Aug 22, 2007 by Steve Sobel (steve) | | ... and welcome new members!
Quad Day 2007 proved to be a success, with a meeting of about 40 people taking place last night, and a large number of new signups on the website as well.
We expect that with added man(and woman!)power, openingbands will have a great school year 2007-2008. If you couldn't make it to the first meeting, don't worry - all of our meetings are open-door and we'd love for you to join us. If you're interested in contributing or even just attending meetings to meet other people interested in meetings, come back and check out the Get Involved page to see when our next meeting is. Currently we're in the process of securing a university room to accomodate for the number of our new members, so expect more regular meeting postings soon!

| Added Aug 21, 2007 by Steve Sobel (steve) | | Welcome new students...
Our introductory meeting is tonight outside of the union at 7pm (quad side!) we hope to see you there!
Hello everyone - just a quick welcome from OpeningBands.com to all of the new students this year. Thanks for dropping by and taking a look - hopefully you found us at Quad Day if it wasn't rained out....
What the heck is openingbands, exactly? It's an organization dedicated to promoting local and independent music. We have the area's most comprehensive concert listings and provide a place for the local music community to get together and share opinions and ideas. We're a collective of volunteers passionate about music - whether it's writing about it or getting out in the trenches and flyering for shows.
We're hoping you'll join our organization, and there's a whole lot of good reasons to do so, plus it's good for your resume! We're looking for any/all of the following:
- Aspiring writer? We need people to write CD reviews or feature articles, sometimes interviewing great bands, etc.
- Want to be truly immersed in the local music scene and learn to book concerts? Lots of openingbands staffers have experience and can help.
- Photographer? We'd love to post your concert photos!
- Graphic designer? We're always in need of flyers for shows, events, etc.
Again, welcome to campus. OpeningBands would love to have you...

Pygmalion Festival to Kick Off This Month [Pitchfork] - The people of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois unleashed REO Speedwagon upon the world in the early 1970's, and they've been making up for it ever since. Braid, Hum, Poster Children, and the Didjits are but a few Chambana bands that have vaulted the city into the same indie rock league as Chapel Hill, Athens, and Olympia-- college towns with musical influence in absolute disproportion to their size.
The Opportunists and Col. Rhodes call it quits [Buzz] - This July, we bid goodbye to Colonel Rhodes and The Opportunists, two outstanding local bands that never got as much attention as they deserve.
Review: Desafinado - s/t [Buzz] - Review of the C-U based latin band.
Interview: Shipwreck [Buzz] - The Buzz's Kyle Gorman talks with Shipwreck about their music and their new album.
City on Film [The Onion's A.V. Club Staff Picks] - Former Braid and Hey Mercedes frontman Bob Nanna's new project, City on Film, is highlighted on The Onion's A.V. Club Media Center as a staff favorite.
